Wife's Burnett family decendend from Burnett's of Barns. Her John Burnett was a Jacobite Capt of Artillery. captured at Carlisle found guilty by the court in London but reprieved after swearing allegiance to the King and transported to the colonies for a minium of 7 years. This book while "fiction" paints a thrilling account of the family's life in some hard times.
John Buchan is best known for his book 39 Steps set in the early 20th century, but I love his adventure stories set in earlier times. Buchan loved Scotland, and this book set in the time of James Stewart takes the reader into the glens, along the burns, across the moors, and onto the crags of the Scottish highlands, following the trail of a studious young laird who, dispossessed of his lands and wrongly accused of treason, attempts to clear his name and save his beloved from the clutches of a powerful rival kinsman. This book gives an authentic feel of the place as well as the political rivalries and philosophical ideas of the time, and as in all of Buchan's books, has a worthy protagonist, some interesting sidekicks, and a dastardly foe. Well worth the time to read it.
My wife is a descendant of the Burnett's of Barnes. We ordered the four hardbacks you had available for Christmas presents. Each had been removed from a library in excellent condition and each was received timely from different vendors. Thanks

If you have enjoyed the depth and detail of any of Buchans novels, you will certainly enjoy John Burnet of barns, a novel to `submerge` yourself in, one of his `better` ones.
Great storytelling with a wonderful Scottish landscape as the setting. The dialect could cause some readers difficulty.
