The book has been nominated for several of SA's fiction prizes and for very good reason. The writing is perfectly paced, the suspense gripping but not exhausting, the character development subtle but bone-rattlingly good. I loved the passages of excellent prose - if you don't believe me read the Karoo thunderstorm scene, yeah, if you weren't *there* as he wrote it I pity you - even if my Anglophile self had to look up words and kind of lose my place in the story because the words he used tasted so good.A good story leaves you visibly shaken afterwards and an excellent writer leaves you feeling abandoned and wishing there were more words. Like you could somehow magically paw extra pages onto the story because you cannot believe you were just left like that. Kruger does this.
